Rhode
(Greece)
Rhodes is home to various beautiful beaches and a charming inland mountainous region. These natural conditions predominantly determine the activities that holidaymakers to this sunny island are able to pursue.
Watersports such as swimming, surfing and diving may be enjoyed in an equally delightful ambience as may hiking and mountain bike tours. Rhodes offers three main surfing areas: the east coast close to Faliraki, on the west coast close to Ialysos/ Tiánda and deep in the south, at Prassonissi. Sports such as water-skiing or jet skiing are available on all the main beaches on the north coast. Diving enthusiasts can familiarise themselves with the underwater world in Kalithea bay, close to Rhodes Town.
The rocky inlands and southern areas are appealing for hikers and mountain bikers wishing to discover the diverse scenery. Although the slopes are relatively manageable, it is important to note that even the easier tours in the summer heat demand good physical condition and plenty of liquid replenishment. Guided hikes can be booked beforehand through a number of operators. All the larger hotel complexes afford tennis courts and golf lovers will be in heaven at the Afantou Golf Club, just off the Rhodes to Lindos road. The island is also home to around half a dozen go-karting circuits, where holidaymakers can try out their Formula 1 skills.
