Dalaman
(Turkey)
The charming bays with deep-blue waters, the excellent tourist infrastructure, the rich historic legacy, big-city nightlife and the pretty cityscape count amongst Dalaman's undeniable assets.
Of course, these characteristics would only be half as impressive without the omnipresent friendliness and openness of the inhabitants along the coast, who, over thousands of years have become accustomed to contact with foreign visitors. Given that Turkish people in the southwest interact well with foreigners and greet holidaymakers with a friendly and open minded attitude, visitors here feel very welcome.
A self-confident people, the local population also looks back on over 2,000 years of history as this region is seen as the cradle of western civilisation. Various excavation sites from ancient Greek towns such as Kaunos, Xanthos or Patara are situated close to Fethiye and Dalyan. In Fethiye, it would not be out of the ordinary to wander through the streets and suddenly come across a Lycian stone sarcophagus of probably over 1,000 years in age. The cliff tombs high above the city are reminiscent of the old historic settlements in this area. Long ago, people were already aware of the benefits of the Mediterranean climate; the constant sunny weather from March through to November with summers that weren't quite as hot as on the Turkish Riviera.
